Call a Bike

Everywhere in Berlin’s downtown you can see such high-tech bikes. German Rail (Deutsche Bahn) offers a unusual service: Call a Bike. The concept is simple: just call a number that stays on the bike, get a code and unlock the bike with this code. After the journey just lock the bike again. A minute of rent costs 8 eurocents, 24 hours – 15 euros, a week – 60 euros. More bikes »

Are these used mostly by locals or by tourists? Nice idea!

I guess mostly by locals - the idea is simple but not so transparent (too simle?)

Very interesting idea. I suppose tourists might find it useful as well. I wish this service existed when I was in Berlin a few years ago.

What a great idea - hope other cities catch on and try it!

In a way this renting bikes is something like using Google or some other online word processing program to write something. As it is now, it is free and one no longer has to buy Microsoft Word. It is also like renting a car. But the bike is a great idea.

That's very trendy :-)) We have those in Montpellier too. I think it is a great idea. I hope it will develop all over Europe.
